Friendswood falls to Calallen in 4A baseball semifinals First inning dooms Mustangs in state tourney debut By SAM KHAN Jr.

ROUND rock — In Friendswood's first trip to the state baseball game tournament, the first frame was one the Mustangs would wish to forget.

With three hit batsmen, two mistakes and a brace of hits, the Mustangs spotted Principal Christi Calallen five tallies in the first framework and it would be more than than adequate for the Wildcats as they went on to overcome Friendswood 7-1 in the Class 4A state semis on Wednesday at Dell Diamond.

"It's one of those things," Friendswood manager Charlie Deems Taylor said. "They were able to leap out there and capitalise on hit hitters and strung some hits together and (take advantage) of some mistakes we had out there and set five tallies on the board. It's awfully hard defeat that."

The problem started when Friendswood senior righthander Stefan Myers hit the first two batters, Calallen's Derek Hagy and Jeramie Marek. The Wildcats' 3rd hitter, Kris Guerrero, grounded into a fielder's pick that looked to be a military unit out of Marek at 2nd base, but Dan Liufau's throw to Friendswood shortstop Michael Ruiz was too high and the alkalis were loaded.

Calallen's Saint Patrick Frasier followed with a two-RBI single and the Mustangs (27-10) committed another mistake on the drama to let a 3rd tally to mark as right fielder William F. Cody Bergeson's throw to place missed catcher Flatness McLaren. Frasier later came place on an tally batted in single by Roland Resendez and hurler Mount Logan Verrett scored the 5th run on a fielder's pick by Mat Garza for a 5-0 first frame lead.

"I wish I could have got (the first inning) back," Myers said. "But it's the game of baseball game and it travels on."

That was plenty of tally support for Verrett (18-0), a Baylor signee, as he dominated on the hill for Calallen (41-1), throwing a complete game and allowing four hits while dramatic out 12 on just 86 pitches. He located his heater well and used his curveball effectively to maintain the Mustangs off balance.

"He was an ace," said Myers (10-4), who took the loss after 4 2/3 innings of work. "He's going to a large Division I school and he looked like it. He came out and looked good."

Friendswood picked up a tally in the 3rd inning. Lifuau singled and Ruiz drove him in with an run batted in double to cut the Calallen Pb to 5-1, but the Wildcats added a solo home run by Skyler Hoelscher and an run batted in double by Resendez in the 5th for the concluding border of victory.

Ruiz went 2-for-2 on the twenty-four hours to supply one of the Mustangs' few bright spots. Throughout the postseason, they've been able to set together large innings but that didn't go on on Wednesday.

"Normally we have got got a large frame towards the end but we didn't have that (this time)," McLaren said.

Myers settled down after the first and the squads played close baseball game the remainder of the way, leaving some to inquire what could have got been if not for the black first.

"You don't cognize what would have got happened if we had made dramas behind him (in the first)," Deems Taylor said. "It's just the manner travels sometimes."

Though their issue from the state tourney was quick, the Mustangs were proud to have got accomplished something no Friendswood baseball game squad did before them by winning a regional title.

"This was a great year," McLaren said. "We played baseball game after school was out for the first time. It was great."
